It seems to have become almost traditional to open these reports with the words ‘despite the weather…’, so let’s break with tradition!
Earlier this year (2008), an article appeared in the Hunts Post highlighting the difficulties being faced by many of the town and village carnivals in the local area. The main issues for most were: The cost and availability of insurance. Health and Safety, and the preparation of Risk Assessments. The limited number of volunteers and helpers. All these issues, and more, are of concern to all of us, every year. Somersham is not exempt from the challenges faced by any other carnival, or indeed any other voluntary organisation. Unless you are fortunate enough to have an insurance underwriter on your committee (I suspect not), or a Health & Safety professional (more feasible), then these dilemmas will be perennial. However, while others are sadly faltering, Somersham Carnival appears to be thriving. 2008 again saw a record attendance, with every attraction, side stall and vendor reporting a bumper year. Virtually every Carnival event during the week also saw an increase in visitor numbers and the feedback received so far has been very positive. The Committee has worked hard in recent years, taking on board the comments and criticisms received, to vary and alter the events in order that they should appeal to a wider audience, and satisfy their critics. This willingness to adapt, modify, amend and change according to public opinion, will I am sure, secure the future of the Carnival. This AGM, as you know, marks the end of my tenure as Chairman as I will not be standing for re-election. I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Committee and found the experience both rewarding and enriching. I shall miss it. But the time has come for someone with a little more energy to take the Hot Seat!! |
